IN THE MOOD FOR TOPS

A magazine editor told me that accessories are more important than clothes.  Maybe two things are most important– accessories (handbags, shoes, outerwear) and tops. Most of the time we are sitting down so what is seen is our top.  Even when we are standing most time is spent looking at a person’s torso. Why is it a challenge to find great tops? Fall, Winter are sweater seasons but we don’t need the bulk or extra warmth for going out at night so there is still a need for an embellished or interesting neckline or pop of color top. Click here for the three most flattering types of tops according to a celebrity stylist (but sadly I am not fond...

IN THE MOOD FOR SPRING TRENDS

A dear friend has asked me for quick fashion and beauty edits in her price range, because she is always so crunched for time as a working mom. She also thought that Rebecca Minkoff wasn't in her budget (see my previous post Runway Show, Rebecca Minkoff SS16). I told her that RM is actually priced lower/similarly to DVF a brand she likes so she was surprised, and I thought I should post this to let others know. For RM Sale click HERE and for RM new arrivals click HERE. I will keep my eyes wide open - they have been featured on The Outnet and at Off 5th in the past. As for Spring trends: I would stick with the bold gold jewelry,...

IN THE MOOD FOR ORGANICS AGAIN (JUICE BEAUTY & GWYNETH PALTROW)

At what point does aspirational simply become the ridiculous? I've personally heard and read opinions that they've had enough with Gwyneth Paltrow's "goop" and her "I am perfect living a perfect life" and that everyone should buy into this concept (at a high price tag). It is so interesting to me that she quite literally eliminated a large portion of women from being able to afford her new skincare collab w Juice Beauty by pricing at $90-$140 per product. I feel this was a miss. I am sure the products are great (they better be epic at these prices), but this approach reminds me of the 80s American Express positioning of club exclusivity. That was illogical. You...

IN THE MOOD FOR BOLD GOLD JEWELRY

Bold yellow gold jewelry is a trend for Spring and Summer.  So if you have some that have been sitting in a box, now is the time to dust them off and make use of them. I love a bold gold earring and was very sad when I lost one of my favorite sets because it is such a classic shape and the perfect size to be impactful but worn everyday. My clever mother suggested that I have the remaining earring made into a necklace which I did and I love it. Check out the selection of gorgeous Verdura ear clips for inspiration. There are some great costume options. I've heard many women say that even pricier costume jewelry...

IN THE MOOD FOR A SHOPPING DAY

Barney's in Chelsea on 7th Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets is now open. I have heard that it is beautifully designed with an open feeling, easy to shop flow, zero designer boutiques, and no logo sensory overload. Plus it has a lot of seating, varied prices, a treatment spa, Fred's, an option to receive lookbooks on your smart phone while in store, and most importantly new brands. Some of the beauty brands carried include Mila Moursi, Tatcha, 111skin, Chantecaille Hourglass, by Terry, Givenchy, Chanel. I used to work near Barney's midtown and enjoyed its curated selection of indie designers. I knew I could always find something unique there. You may also want to check out these three upcoming sales. Saks Fifth...

IN THE MOOD FOR A BEAUTY MYTH BUSTED

In yesterday's post I mentioned that I'm not a fan of my hair naturally dried. I just read this article that air drying hair is actually bad for it. While some know that a partial blow-dry and less frequent washing (with no sulfates) is best, this may be new news to many so I thought I'd share it....

IN THE MOOD TO MIX IT UP (PARISIAN CHIC)

A friend who always looks polished gave me the Ines de la Fressange book Parisian Chic. I liked the Mix It Up section on pages 18 and 19. My favorites are the reminders to combine pearls with a rock n roll t-shirt or edgy look (not with a classic or simple outfit), wear ballet slippers (not heels) with a pencil skirt, pair jeans with embellished sandals (not sneakers). This approach reminds me of the Oscars' low key hair with fancy gown combination that I saw and liked so much. My friend and I were discussing the no blow drying, no hair styling, no real makeup to speak of, not really trying at all beauty approach. Each of...
